History of Decathlon's Sports Adaptés (Adaptive Sports) brand
The Decathlon Adaptive Sports team developed the para-athletics wheelchair in conjunction with the University of Bergamo and the FISPES federation. The para-athletics wheelchair was designed to meet the needs of disabled athletes and give them independence. Adapted Sports products are designed and tested with the participation of disabled people, to offer them equipment and clothing suitable for athletes.
Certified approval and medical device
The para-athletics wheelchair is an approved medical device. It is certified according to the EN 12183 standard by CERAH, an official body that carries out preliminary checks to make sure products satisfy all the eligibility criteria.
How to choose a disabled sport wheelchair
Observation of the following criteria:
- the level and frequency of practice.
- the comfort of the para-athletics wheelchair.
- the possibility of adjustments.
- the safety elements of the wheelchair.
The Decathlon AW500 adjustable para-athletics wheelchair is designed and tested by disabled athletes to best meet the needs of sportsmen and women.
The wheelchair is authorised by CERAH.
How to maintain your athletics wheelchair
Weekly:
- Check the pressure of the tyres to preserve the fluidity of the wheelchair.
- Clean and oil the rapid wheel removal device regularly.
Quarterly:
- Check the wear on the front wheels, the effectiveness of the pads on the back wheels and the rotation of the yokes.
- Lubricate the moving parts (axles, compasses).
- Replace the parts if necessary.
- Use silicone oil as a lubricant.
Wheelchair user recommendations
Check that the rapid removal device for the drive wheels is locked.
Regular maintenance of the para-athletics wheelchair and appropriate use in compliance with the manufacturer's recommendations is necessary to ensure the safety of the user.
The wheelchair is designed to reduce the risk of accidents in the conditions of use indicated in the instructions.
It is recommended that you read the explanatory notes before using it for the first time.
Frame
7020 aluminium alloy frame. The centre of gravity is set as 20 cm, though a different setting may be used according to the needs and comfort of the user.
The wheelchair is designed to bear a maximum weight of 100 kg.
Seat
Adjustable seat width: 30 cm by default.
It may be adjusted between 25 cm and 39 cm by notches of 1 cm as required.
Back
- the back can be adjusted into 4 positions. The height and angle of the back can be adjusted.
- padded canvas cover for greater comfort during practise and para-athletics races. - the tension of the canvas can be adjusted with hook-and-loop fastener tabs. (see instruction manual for more details).
Drive wheels
28" drive wheels. Can be replaced with 26" wheels (option) without changing the body position
Tyres suitable for athletics tracks.
The camber of the wheels is preset to 11°.
The wheels are easy to dismantle.
Front wheels
Front wheels: 20".
Tubular frame for the track.
Handle, handlebar
The para-athletics wheelchair is fitted with a directional lever for the track and handlebars for steering in the street. The wheelchair is also equipped with a steering damper which can be adjusted into 3 positions for use on the track or on the road.
Handrails
Rubber-coated aluminium handrails with a fitted diameter of 37 cm.
There is an option to replace them with handrails with a diameter of between 29 cm and 41 cm.
