The story behind the Decathlon Adapted Sports brand
The Decathlon Adapted Sports team has set itself the mission of making sport even more accessible by offering wheelchairs designed for wheelchair fencing. The design teams had two objectives: to keep users comfortable and to make them autonomous at all times. The fencing wheelchair has been developed, designed and tested in collaboration with people with various disabilities to create a wheelchair that meets disabled athletes' needs.
Accreditation and medical device
The FW500 fencing wheelchair has been certified as meeting the EN 12183 standard by CERAH. Tests were conducted and the technical documentation on Decathlon wheelchairs was validated. The wheelchair is adapted to all skill levels, including beginners and intermediates taking part in competitions. It is very important for us to make sport accessible to as many people as possible while also keeping users safe.
How to choose your fencing wheelchair
Consider these criteria:
- how often you fence and how good you are.
- how comfortable you want your wheelchair to be.
- whether it can be adjusted.

The Decathlon FW500 fencing wheelchair has been designed with the help of wheelchair fencers so that it suits as many people as possible – including athletes entering in competitions – and keeps users safe and comfortable.
This wheelchair has been certified by the certification body CERAH.
How to maintain your FW500 wheelchair
Every week:
- Check the tyre pressure for the most efficient braking and smooth wheelchair movement.
- Clean and oil the wheel removal system.
Every three months:
- Check the front wheels for wear and make sure the bearings on the front and rear wheel and on the fork are in good condition.
- Lubricate all moving parts (wheel axles, etc.).
Recommendations: replace parts if necessary, use silicone oil to lubricate parts.
HOW TO USE IT
Always check that the wheels are correctly locked in place.
For safety, regularly maintain your fencing wheelchair and use it according to the manufacturer's specifications.
The wheelchair was designed to reduce the risk of accidents before, during and after use under the conditions specified in the user guide.
The wheelchair is shipped with the back wheels unmounted.
Frame
Frame made from a lightweight 7020 aluminium alloy.
The fencing wheelchair has aluminium rings to attach the straps that hold it to the base plate.
The wheelchair is designed to hold a maximum weight of 120 kg.
Seat
The FW500 fencing wheelchair is available in two seat widths:
Size L: seat width: 40 cm.
Size XL: seat width: 46 cm.
The seat depth adjusts from 40 to 42 cm.
Seat height: 53 cm.
This wheelchair has a removable seat made from rigid aluminium with a cushion on top.
Backrest
The backrest height can be adjusted from 25 cm to 39 cm. The backrest height is set at 29 cm but can be adjusted from 25 cm to 39 cm (the wheelchair comes with 2 extenders).
The default angle of the backrest compared to the ground is 91°
Distance between the hub and backrest: 9 cm.
As per international regulations, the backrest of the fencing wheelchair is fitted with stiff, padded fabric that complies with international wheelchair fencing competition rules.
Back wheels
Wheels: 25".
53 cm aluminium hand rims and 2° pre-set camber.
The wheels can be easily removed.
Front wheels
Front caster wheels with a diameter of 125 mm.
Cushion
10 cm thick polyurethane cushion with a hardness of 75 Sh. The cushion is 40 cm deep.
The cushion has been designed to meet the needs of wheelchair fencers, be they recreational fencers or para athletes taking part in high-level competitions.
The cushion does not prevent sores.
Safety straps
The wheelchair has safety straps at the thighs and feet (calves).
Thigh strap: Height: 8 cm.
The length of the strap varies depending on the seat size.
Size L seat (40 cm): 160 cm strap.
Size XL seat (46 cm): 180 cm strap.
Foot (calf) strap length: Height: 8 cm.
Grab handle and armrest
The armrest side of the chair has 1 cm padding.
Grab handle details and adjustments: - grab handle-to-seat height: 22 cm.

Footrest
The fencing wheelchair has a 26 cm-long footrest.
