You will need to know whether your gun has undergone the steel pellet test, which is represented by a fleur-de-lis stamp on the barrel. Most often, modern guns have undergone the steel pellet test and have 76 (magnum) chambers, and allow for a wide range of ammunition to be fired without any issues or concerns. As for older weapons, which often have 70 chambers or less and which are very rarely tested, you’ll need to use other adapted ammunition, known as "low pressure" or "standard" cartridges.

Tips on selecting the shot size

Alternative ammunition often has a larger pellet size than lead ammunition. This is simply because, in order to find a suitable ammunition for the game you’re hunting, you will need to increase your usual bullet size by 2 numbers in order to switch to lead-free ammunition.

For example: pigeon shooters who usually shoot with a cartridge loaded with No. 6 lead should change to a cartridge loaded with No. 4 steel.
